EVALUATION OF CYTOTOXICITY OF CLOVE, A COMMON SPICE ON VICIA FABA ROOT MERISTEMSSOMESH YADAV AND ANJU YADAVAbstract The cytotoxic effects of aqueous extract of dove (Eugenia aromaticum) were studied on Vicia faba root tips. The results obtained in the present study stowed that extract was mitodepresstve in nature. The mitotic index decreased as the concentration and duration of treatment was increased. The treated root tips of V. faba showed various chromosomal aberrations such as chromosomal breakage at metaphase and anaphase, disturbed metaphase, chromatid seperation, scattered metaphase, stickiness of chromosome, ring at metaphase, chromosomal extrusion, laggards, bridge at anaphase and polarity abolition. These cytological effects seem to be induced by the alkaloid eugenol present in clove and showed the mutagenic nature of the spice.
