Abstract

A study had been carried out to assess the respiratory functional status of rare earth factory workers of Kerala. One hundred and fifteeen rare earth factory workers and sixty-one normal controls were selected for the study. Respiratory functions were measured with a portable PC based spirometer-Medspiror. significant reduction in FVC and FEVi/FVC% (P<0.01) was observed among smoker workers while only FVC (P<0.0l) was decreased in non-smokers. Expiratory flow rates, viz. FEF25.7 FFP 25s F'EF 50,4 and FEF 75% were reduced in smokers and non-smokers (P<0.0). No significant difference in respiratory function was observed between non-smokers and smokers. FVC and FEVI (P<0.01) were found decreasing with increasing exposure duration while flow rates were unaffected.
