A SHORT REPORT ON THE INCIDENCE OF LUMINESCENT BACTERIA IN DISEASED SHRIMP PENAEUS INDICUS

O.SIVAPRIYA & R. PALANIAPPAN

Abstract

Studies on both qualitative and quantitative distribution of luminescent bacteria in the gill and muscle tissues of infected shrimp Penaeus indieus have been undertaken. The results revealed the presence of higher number of luminescent bacteria in the gills of the diseased shrimp muscle tissue, and the diseased shrimp harboured higher number of luminescent bacteria than the normal shrimp. A total of 26 luminescent bacterial isolates from the experimentally than Ihe shrimp consists of major species such as V. harveyi & V. fischeri, in which V. harveyi infected was isolated as a dominant species. The high incidene of V. harveyi than V. fischeri is due to its later flagella, which support adsorption in the gills and muscle tissues of the shrimp. But V. polar flagellation that could not support as lateral flagella. Thus it is understood risch eo Has Jthat, the Increase in the population of the normal luminescent bacteria in the diseased shrimp unistic pathogen and the prolonged storation also favours an increased growth act 05 "Pnrt of du! organism in t he shrimp.
