REDUCING THE BANKFUL STAGE BY MEANS OF LABYRINTH SPILLWAYS IN STORAGE DAMS

Mohammad Ali Izadbakhsh

Abstract

The right choice for the spillway has got a great role in decreasing the bankful stage of the cities or the land of the storage dams upstream. Sometimes, we are, unfortunately, witnessing the improper choice for the spillways for the storage dams. Using the labyrinth weirs is a proper choice for revising the spillways having some difficulty in conveying the maximum probable discharge. The right understanding of the function of these spillways can reduce the costs of their construction and to prevent from any bankful stage disaster. The present research paper aims to present the efficiencies in using the labyrinth weirs in nape reducing through a rating curve. The used method in this research project is the mathematical model. The used models are trapezoidal in two cycles with the total width of 60 cm and the heights of 10 cm, 15 cm & 20 cm. Because of a complex 3 dimensional flow on the spillway, the flow is considered turbulent. The free surface level was determined by introducing the boundary and initial conditions, and choosing the volume of the fluid model. Finally, the measurement results of the trapezoidal spillways were compared to the normal spillway’s results. There were some satisfactory results in using the labyrinth weirs compared to the use of the normal spillways in reducing the bankful stage.
