CALCAREOUS ALGAE FROM SIJU LIMESTONE OF DOBAGIRI AREA, GARO HILLS OF MEGHALAYA, INDIA

Abstract

The present communication documents for 9 (nine) species / genera of calcareous algae from the Siju Limestone Formation (Jaintia Group) of Dobagiri area of Garo Hills, Meghalaya. The reported species, are mostly coralline red algae both geniculate and non geniculate. It indicates that these fossil bearing calcareous sediments were deposited in shallow water marine environment under low to high energy condition. The reported calcareous algae present in this limestone formation establish the age as Palaeocene-Eocene.
