BIOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF LENTIC HABITAT CREATED BY THE WEIR CUM CAUSEWAY IN TAPI RIVER, SURAT

Abstract

This work represents the evaluating of the present status of biota with respect to phytoplankton, fish and bacteria in Tapi river after construction of weir cum causeway. In all five stations were selected for the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of phytoplankton, in the lentic habitat created by weir cum causeway due to the impoundment of Tapi river. Among these four stations were selected in the fresh water zone and one in brackish water zone. Diatoms were dominant followed by blue-green algae and green algae. Microbiological evaluation revealed the drastic increase in E. coli population.
