ETHNO-MEDICO-BOTANICAL STUDIES OF THE TRIBALS OF LOWER PALANI HILLS, SOUTH INDIA

Abstract

Ethno-medico-botanical studies of the tribe, Pulayans, inhabiting the Western offshoot of Eastern Ghats in Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu were undertaken. The Pulayans resemble the tribe Paliyans, of Sirumalai hills (Dindigul district) in their settlements (hamlets), social custom, religious belief and traditional practices. The ethnobotanical data includes hitherto unreported 44 plant species of 42 genera belonging to 30 families. Based on utility the collected medicinal plants are broadly grouped under three categories viz. Exclusively medicinal (34 spp); edible (9spp) and miscellaneous (14 spp) for easy reference/documentation. information on the medicinal plants employed by the Pulayans and also to enumerate the other plants of their day to day life. An attempt is made to bring to light hitherto not reported 44 plant species belonging to 42 genera and 30 families used by Pulayans for various purposes including as .,,,f1,nru-npr1irinal plants.
