SEASONAL VARIATION OF FLUORIDE IN RUSHIKULYA ESTUARY, EAST COAST OF INDIA

TAPAN RANI MAHAPATRO

Abstract

Seasonal variations of fluoride and chlorinity in surface waters of Rushikulya Estuary have been studied during the period of 1998 December to 1999 November. The distributions of these parameters in different seasons, from mouth along the course of the river at seven selected locations in different seasons were observed. Maximum values of fluoride and chlorinity concentrations were observed during summer (May-June) and minimum during postmonsoon (September - November) period. The affect of super cyclone during postmonsoon period had resulted efflux of large volume of fresh water into the estuary, which accounted minimum values of fluoride and chlorinity concentration over monsoon (July-August) period. The average chlorinity and fluoride values were 4.23% and 0.26 mg/1 respectively and these parameters are fairly increased from the head to mouth of the estuary.
