USE OF POTATO STARCH FOR EXTRACELLULAR AMYLASE PRODUCTION BY A YEAST ISOLATEG.S. KOCHER AND P. KATYALAbstract An amylolytic yeast isolate identified as Schwaniomyces occidental is produced extracellular amylase with maximum dextrinyzing (174 units in 15 to 18 h, pH 5.5 at 30°C) and saccharifying (120 units in 18-21 h at 30°C and pH of 5.5) activities when grown as shake flask cultures with yeast extract (0.3%) as nitrogen source. The crude amylase dextrinized and saccharified a 1% solution of soluble potato starch by 90% in 3 hours.
