A. RAMALINGAM, M. GANGATHARAN AND R. KASTURI BAI

Abstract

Agro residues namely coir pith and paddy straw are decomposed with white rot fungi Pleurotus djamor. The raw coir pith used in the present study has 88% of total solids, 41% of crude fibre, 28% of cellulose, 2.19% of crude protein and C/N ratio of 139.94. It showed the degradation of crude fibre of 41% to 17% and cellulose of 28% to 13% correspondingly and there is an increase of 6.56% from 2.19% of crude protein as the consequence of biotreatment. The raw paddy straw has the total solids of 77.63%, crude fibre of 39.5%, cellulose of 38.33% and C/N ratio of 61.6. Biotreatment degrades the crude fibre of 39.5% to 35.0% and cellulose of 38.33% to 32.5%. It is also noted that there is an increase of 3.69% to 5.25% of crude protein.
