BIOREMEDIATION OF CR(VI) BY STAPHYLOCOCCUS SP. ISOLATED FROM TANNERY EFFLUENT

V. SELVI AND G.P. JEYANTHI

Abstract

Staphylococcus sp. isolated from a tannery effluent had the potential to remove Cr(VI) from solution. The rate and extent of Cr(VI) uptake were influenced by various parameters namely cell age, metal ion concentration, metabolic state and incubation period. The Cr(VI) uptake was influenced by culture age where aged cultures showed decreased uptake. The percentage removal of Cr(VI) was decreased with increasing initial metal concentration. The uptake of Cr(VI) was increased with increasing incubation period among resting, dead and metabolically inhibited cells. Dead cells showed a higher uptake of Cr(VI) than the resting cells and metabolically inhibited cells.
