ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE AND METAL TOLERANCE OF BACTERIA ISOLATED FROM DISTILLERY SITE

ASHISH K. ASTHANA, P.K. PANDEV, AND S.K. MISHRA.

Abstract

Distillery sites were selected for antibiotic resistance and metal tolerance study, because distillery effluent contains high concentration of heavy metals along with other organic and inorganic pollutants. 320 bacterial strains of 16 different genera were isolated from different sites. Bacterial strains were tested for metal tolerance (Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn) and antibiotics resistance (cephaloridine, vancomycin, colistin, bacitracin, ampicillin, chloramphenicol and tetracycline) at their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). It was found that most of the isolates were multiple antibiotic resistance and metal tolerance. This antibiotic resistance may be due to heavy metal released in distillery sites.
