MOBILIZATION OF FOOD RESERVES IN WHEAT SEEDS GERMINATED IN PRESENCE OF CADMIUMDHARMENDER, NEERAJ DILBAGHP, NEERAJ KUMAR AND L.K. CHUGHAbstract Inclusion of 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 mM Cd2F as CdCl'in media successfully reduced growth of embryonic axes of germinating wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seeds. The deleterious effect of the metal was more pronounced on the radicle. Mobilization of starch as well as insoluble protein was significantly inhibited by the 4th day of germination. Accumulation of starch, reducing sugars, insoluble protein and free amino acids in axes of seeds germinated in media containing the heavy metal was also curtailed. The possible impact of these effects on growth of axes is discussed.
