STUDIES ON THE CHEMICAL CHANGES OF SOIL DURING LABORATORY EXPERIMENT BY AN INGIGENOUS AN EPIGES EARTHWORM PER] ONYX EXCAVATLIS PIRRERGOUTAM KUMAR CHANDA AND SUSANTA KUMAR CHAKRABORTYAbstract Desirable level of C/N ratio in soil is required to accelerate the plant growth. Earthworm by virtue of it's life activities maintain the C/N ratio of soil at a level (< 20:1) which is very conducive for plants to utilize these nutrients. The epiges earthworm are humus feeders and they play key role in maintaininc, the environmental health of soil by way of accelerating the growth of microbes and thereby promote the plant growth. The present paper has attempted to assess the capability of an indigenous epiges earthworm, Perionyx excavati.th Pirrer to alter the nutrient status and also the C/N ratio of soil. Experimental studies wre revealed that the earthworms inoculated sterilized soils showed an increasing trend in the carbon and nitrogen content but a decreasing trend with regard tt the C/N ratio of soil with the passage of time.
