Abstract

Antimicrobial activity of aqueous extract of Samanea saman was investigated by Disc-Diffusion method against three organisms' viz., Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albi cans. Penicillin, Streptomycin and Chloramphenicol were used as controls. The growth of all the organisms was found to be inhibited by the plant extract. The inhibition was found to be concentration dependent. 10mg/mL concentration inhibited E.coli and C. albicans while 25mg/mL was necessary to show inhibition against S. aureus. A chi-square test was performed on the data and a level of 10% significance was obtained. This study shows that the extract has an antimicrobial activity as that of the commercial antibiotics. Thus the plant can be used as a remedy for the tested pathogenic infections.
