Abstract

The study area is in the agro climatic zone of middle central table land having soil texture as light sandy loam, laterite mixed with red and black soil. The ground water resources assessed at Angul and Dhenkanal is 86673 hm and 65195 hm respectively. In the study area there are six open cast coal mines and four underground coal mines. The coal mines are draining 10142m3 of water every day from the study area and throwing them out. That is why the ground water table is decreasing day by day. Again the contaminated water percolated to ground water table and thus ground water is being polluted. The present investigation deals with a study of physico-chemical characteristics of water samples taken from six different sampling locations situated near the industrial zone of Talcher. From the analysis physico-chemical parameter of water samples high heavy metal pollution was noted in ground waters.
