BIODIVERSITY OF OSTRACODS IN VELACHERY LAKE TAMILNADU INDIA

N. Uma Chandra, K. Revathi and V. Rekha

Abstract

Ostracods are shrimp-like crustaceans that are sensitive to changes in the water quality and are regarded as valuable bio-indicators therefore they are used in investigation of water quality. Their community structure not only allows estimating of the level of pollution, but also indicates the trend of general conditions over time. If changes in species diversity and population abundances result from either direct or indirect environmental stressors, then the changes in biota may be used to elucidate changes in the environment. Ostracods may be excellent organisms to use as indicators of water quality, but such an idea requires detailed knowledge about their ecology, distribution, biology and habitat requirements. To show the patterns of their diversity the ecosystem Velachery Lake was examined during 2009-2010 This paper summarizes the diversity of thirteen Ostracod species which belongs to the family Cyprididae and subfamily Cypridinae.
