Abstract

In this paper, groundwater pollution in the Rasipuram Taluk, Tamilnadu, India is studied. Concentrations of several physico-chemical parameters have been estimated in 45 groundwater sampling locations for their suitability for drinking during pre-monsoon season (August, 2012). The study exposed that most of the samples have higher concentrations of Total Dissolved Solids, Total Hardness, Nitrite, Sodium and Phosphates. The presences of Sago industries and chemical fertilizers from agricultural sources have polluted the groundwaters. The TDS concentrations have been increased up to 5805 mg/L and exceed the limits in about 60% of the samples studied in the area. In about 30 sampling locations, the ground water is not suitable for drinking as per IS standard values. As a result of diverse changes in land use pattern and in water resource management, loss of water resources and an intense contamination has taken place.
