Abstract

An exhaust noise of automotive engine is the main component of the noise pollution in the urban environment, with the ever increasing population density of vehicles on the road. The suitable design and development of exhaust muffler will help to reduce the noise level in the urban environment. The present work aims at predicting the noise level of an exhaust muffler with perforated end plate used in a multi cylinder diesel engine. The Ashok Leyland Hino (hin-edw06d) six-cylinder diesel engine was considered for test purposes. Different configurations of Mufflers are developed and studied exhaust noise level of the engine to very the load and speed. In addition, the current studies were compared with the conventional muffler in term of noise reduction, brake thermal efficiency and brake specific fuel consumptions. The newly developed muffler was found to be good in noise reduction, specific fuel consumptions and acoustic performance compare with existing muffler.
