Abstract

The experiment was conducted at Zonal Agricultural Research Station, Gandhi Krishi Vignana Kendra, Bengaluru during Kharif season of 2010 and 2011. The soil of the experimental site was red sandy loam in texture belonging to the order Alfisol. The soil pH was slightly acidic (6.2) with an electrical conductivity of 0.2 dSm -1 . The soil organic carbon content was low (0.42%). The soil was low in available nitrogen (202.9 kg ha -1 ), medium in available phosphorus (28.8 kg ha -1 ) and available potassium (201.8 kg ha -1 ).Among herbicidal treatments pre emergence application of Pendemethalin @ 0.75 kg a.i. ha -1 + one H.W at 50 DAS/Inter cultivation recorded higher seed yield (1279 kg ha -1) and was on par with application of Pendemethalin @ 0.75 kg a.i.ha -1 + Paraquot @ 0.4 kg a.i.ha -1 at 6 WAS (1225 kg ha -1).Weed free plot recorded maximum number of pods per plant (173.2), higher grain yield per plant (57.73 g/plant) and higher 100 seed weight (10.66 g). It was statistically on par with treatment receiving Pendemethalin @ 0.75 kg a.i.ha -1 + one H.W at 50 DAS/ Inter cultivation with respect to all above yield attributing components. Weedy check recorded higher weed dry weight dry weight of total weeds (4.46 g and 5.21g m 2 at 50 and 70 DAS). Among herbicidal treatments all treatments recorded significantly lower weed dry weight compared to weedy check at all the crop growth stages. Application of Pendemethalin @ 0.75 kg a.i.ha -1 + Paraquot @ 0.4 kg a.i.ha -1 at 6 WAS recorded significantly lower weed dry weight (2.50 and 3.31g 0.50 m2 at 50 and 70 DAS, respectively).
