BIRD DIVERSITY AND STATUS IN WESTERN GHATS OF KATGAL (UTTARA KANNADA DIST.), KARNATAKA STATE

Abstract

The Western Ghats consist of unique mountain range running parallel to the western coast of the Indian peninsula, and harbour an incredible biodiversity. The present study conducted in Katgal forest area of Western Ghats, Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka state revealed the presence of 56 species of birds belonging to 12 orders and 25 families. While the birds with omnivorous, grainivorous, piscivorous and insectivorous feeding habits were found in all seasons, high percentage of frugivorous birds was noted during late winter and summer seasons. The percent occurrence of resident birds was high compared to resident migratory and migratory birds.
