WEATHERING AS A PROCESS OF INTEGRATION INTO THE LANDSCAPE OF STEEL MILL WASTESROBERTO CASTRO, MARIANO GOTELLI, ALFREDO LO BALBO, FABIO LUNA AND CARLOS GOTELLIAbstract The study of a waste dump from a steel mill complex covering an area of approximately 154,400m2 in Zapla, Jujuy, Argentina, has shown a remarkable restoration of the terrain and landscape as a consequence of weathering of the slag and deposited cyclone dust. The material behaved as natural laterites disintegrating and being incorporated into a new horizon. Physicochemical and biological environmental factors were the agents of transformation. A primary ecological succession was established and contributed definitively for the restoration of the site. The settlement of wildlife species is being constrained by human activities; however, fauna and flora of the local ecosystem are now present and visible.
