CHARACTERIZATION OF WASTEWATER FROM THE GARA-TIEDYE INDUSTRY IN SIERRA LEONERONNIE A.D. FRAZER-WILLIAMSAbstract Wastewater samples collected from four major gara dying centres namely: Brook Street, Hensley Street, Maraca compound and Fourah Bay field were analyzed according to standard procedures (APHA, 1998). Results revealed high organic matter in terms of COD and chloride contents of effluents from all locations which vary considerably from one location to another Gara tie dye wastewaters are highly colored (usually deep mauve/purple and green in colour), and alkaline with a choking (pungent) odour with low levels of heavy metals. Wastewater having such characteristics (i.e. high dissolve solids, alkalinity, chloride and COD) must be treated before discharge into receiving water bodies to avoid major environmental concerns.
