ROLE OF LOW COST AGRO-BASED ADSORBENT TO TREAT HOSPITAL WASTEWATER

D. SIVAKUMAR

Abstract

The effectiveness of Tamarind kernel powder, a cheap agro-based adsorbent was evaluated to remove colour, turbidity, BOD, COD, TDS and fecal coliform in hospital wastewaters. Experiments were carried out by adding Tamarind kernel powder to the hospital wastewater at different dosages, different rapid mixing contact time and slow mixing contact time. Maximum removal of 86.1, 83.7, 85.3, 81.3, 90.1, and 85.2 % respectively for colour, turbidity, BOD, COD, TDS and fecal coliform was obtained at an optimum dosage of 40 g/L, an optimum rapid mixing contact time of 16 min. and an optimum slow mixing contact time of 40 min. The results of this study revealed that most of the selected parameters in a treated hospital wastewaters showed within surface water discharge standard acceptable limits. Thus, this study concluded that Tamarind kernel powder is used as good adsorbent for the removal of colour, turbidity, BOD, COD, TDS and fecal coliform in hospital wastewater.
