CATCH COMPOSITION OF GILLNETTERS OPERATING OFF JALESHWAR COAST, VERAVAL, GUJARAT ALONG THE WEST COAST OF INDIA

Abstract

The present study was carried out from October, 2008 to September, 2009 to assess the overall fish catch composition of gillnetters operating from Jaleshwar village Veraval (Gujarat). The major fish caught by Out Board Motor (OBM) gillnetters was Indian mackerel (41.62%) followed by Ribbon fish (13.75%) and lesser sardine (9.26%). The productive month for OBM gillnetters was September, which contributed 11.22%. Pelagic fish group had maximum representation with 87.83% and demersal group contributed 12.17%. Among seasons, winter was more productive with a maximum contribution of 39.09%.
