Abstract

The Gogabeel Lake is situated in Katihar District of Bihar. It serves as feeding grounds of fish and birds, area of recreation and has been a source of livelihood and employment for many fishing communities surrounding it. Despite its fisheries and recreational importance, studies with regard to the ichthyofaunal diversity, eco-fishery status and ecology are limited. The present communication deals with ichthyofaunal diversity, fishery and its management along with some suggestions for enhancements in this wetland. The fish fauna of Gogabeel Lake is comprised of 39 species belonging to 12 families. Among the families encountered, Cyprinidae (Indian major carps, minor carps and exotic carps) dominated the fishery. The estimated total fish production of Gogabeel Lake from January 2011 to December 2011 was 41.4 tons.
