Abstract

Mulching in general is a beneficial practice for crop production. Mulch conserves soil moisture, retained heat as well as it suppresses weed growth. The greatest benefit from plastic mulch is that the soil temperature in the planting bed is raised, promoting faster crop development and earlier harvest. Soil water loss is reduced under plastic mulch. As a result, more uniform soil moisture is maintained and irrigation frequency can be reduced. In view of that present investigation was carried out during summer season 2011 at Horticulture Instructional Farm, Department of Horticulture, Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar (Gujarat), India. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with four replications and nine treatments viz., (T1) black polyethylene mulch, (T2) white polyethylene mulch, (T3) silver polyethylene mulch, (T4) transparent polyethylene mulch, (T5) red polyethylene mulch, (T6) yellow polyethylene mulch, (T7) blue polyethylene mulch, (T8) biological mulch and (T9) control (no mulch). The results revealed that soil covered with silver polyethylene mulch achieving the highest growth and yield attributes with good quality fruits of muskmelon.
