BIOSORPTION OF HEAVY METALS USING AGROWASTE: A REVIEW

VISHNU DAYAL RAJPUT AND CHEN YANNING

Abstract

In this review, bacterial and fungal abilities for heavy metal ions removal are emphasized. The heavy metal binding capacity by living microbial cells is significantly lower than dead cells. Factors such as pH, contact time, inoculums dose, temperature which affect biosorption of heavy metals are also discussed. The efficacy of the metal uptake by the microbial biomass is essential for testing on agrowaste materials such as charcoal, rice straw, rice husk, wheat straw, sludge and pressmud in friendly way. The purpose of this paper is to review the available information on various attributes of utilization of microbial biomass and explores the possibility of employing them for heavy metal remediation.
