WET AIR OXIDATION TREATMENT FOR THE BLACK LIQUOR OF PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY

R. GUNASEKARAN AND S. KANMANI

Abstract

Black liquor of pulp and paper industry was treated by Wet Air Oxidation to degrade the toxic and chlorinated compounds. For this study, optimization of operating parameters and process kinetics were carried out. The pH, contact time and catalysts dosage were found optimized at 11, 180 minutes and 5.0 mg/L respectively. The percentage of COD degradation was in the range of 10 to 38 without catalyst, 30 to 61 with catalyst MnO2 and 33-64 with catalyst SeO2 respectively for the pH optimization, in the range of 08 to 51 without catalyst, 21 to 84 with catalyst MnO2 and 24 to 86 with catalyst SeO2 respectively for the contact time optimization and in the range of 55 to 91 with catalyst MnO2 and 64-94 with catalyst SeO2 respectively for the catalyst dosage optimization. Rate of reaction on color removal and COD degradation were behaved in first order with kinetic rate constant was 0.004. Performance of COD degradation was achieved better with catalyst SeO2.
