ASSESSMENT OF SURVIVAL AND BEHAVIORAL CHANGES IN FRESHWATER FISH LABEO ROHITA EXPOSED TO CHLOROACETANILIDE HERBICIDE, BUTACHLORK. SOMAIAH, P.V.V. SATISH AND K. SUNITAAbstract The present study deals with the bioaccumulation of herbicide, Butachlor and its effect on survival and behavioral changes in freshwater fish Labeo rohita. The physico-chemical analysis of water was carried out by standard methods according to American Public Health Association (APHA). The pilot studies were conducted to know the toxicity concentration of herbicide to the fish. The LC50 values of Butachlor found to be 1.5, 1.2, 1.0 and 0.85 mg/L for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h respectively. The fishes have shown uncoordinated behavioral changes such as erratic jerky swimming, attempt to jump out of water, frequent surfacing, gulping of air, decrease in opercular movement and copious secretion of mucus all over the body on exposure of Butachlor in the bench scale experiment. The percentage of mortality was calculated by following Finneys probit analysis method. Hence, the present study revealed that, the LC50 value gradually decreased with the increase of exposure period and the mortality rate increased with increase in concentration of herbicide.
