Abstract

Anaerobic–aerobic systems have been remarkably employed in wastewater treatment for many years. While previously most of the wastewaters have been carried out in conventional anaerobic– aerobic treatment plants, in recent years, high rate anaerobic–aerobic bioreactors have been increasingly employed for waste waters with high chemical oxygen demand (COD). This paper provides a comparative study of the three types of pre treatment system for textile dyeing industries by three dyeing units in Tiruppur and Erode, India. Most of the textile industries commonly used for following pretreatment are classied into three types, which are (i) Physico chemical treatment (ii) Aerobic or Activated Sludge Process (ASP) and (iii) Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor (UASBR). The integration of UASBR degradation pathways is capable of enhancing the overall degradation efficiency. The merits of UASBR are highlighted and comparison to other available effluent treatment methods made to identify possible future areas of research to fully utilize these methods in textile effluent treatment plants. The comparison demonstrates that using an UASBR -aerobic bioreactor, which is treating high strength textile industrial waste water. The advantageous due to minimal space requirements, low capital cost, high TSS and COD removal, an excellent BOD removal efficiencies (in excess of 90%).
