Abstract

The present study was conducted at Research farm, Jabalpur during Kharif 2012 to evaluate the utility of light trap as direct control tool against three major insect pest species of paddy in Jabalpur region namely, White backed plant hopper (Sogatella furcifera, Harv.), Rice leaf folder (Cnaphalocrocis medinalis, Guen.) and Mythimna separata, (Walker)]. Light trap was operated regularly (every night) during the main season of Kharif (August to December, 2012). To evaluate the effective radius (coverage area) of light trap, population level of both the pest species in field on paddy crop were recorded at fortnightly interval in the trap area of 50, 100 and 200 meter away from trap and in non trap area assumed at 500 and 1000 meter distance from trap. The results have consistently proved the utility of light trap as effective control tool against all three species namely S. furcifera, C. medinalis and M. separata. Highest reduction in pest population was in a range between 59 to 72 % in these species at 100 meter distance from trap. Effective coverage area was between 100 to 200 m distances from trap covering around 5 to 6 hectare of crop area per trap. Infestation was consistently and relative higher within 50 meter radius around indicating need for spot treatment of the area to avoid pest damage in crop close to trap.
