Abstract

In the present study the genetic diversity in castor was assessed using simple sequence repeat markers. A total of ten castor genotypes were collected from Seed Research &Technology Centre, ANGRAU, Hyderabad and employed 50 SSR loci study the genetic diversity among them. The number of polymorphic alleles per primer varied from 2 to 3 with average of 1.5 allele per loci. The SSR loci RCDE 46 showed the highest number of alleles (3) with PIC value of 2.62. Cluster analysis based on SSR banding pattern grouped the castor accessions into two major clusters. The highest genetic similarity was observed between the accessions (100%) Kiran and Kiran Nucleus and lowest similarity existed between Kranthi and DPC9(7%). Knowledge on the genetic diversity of castor can be used to future breeding programs to meet the ever increasing demand of castor oil for industrial uses as well as for biodiesel production.
