AGE AND GROWTH STUDY OF PUNTIUS SARANA (HAMILTON, 1822) WESTERN GHATS OF TAMIRAPARANI RIVER, INDIAA. PON SARAVANA KANNAN, T. FRANCIS, P. JAWAHAR AND N. JAYAKUMARAbstract The present study dealt with age and growth of Puntius sarana. Growth equation based on modified von Bertalanffys equation was arrived. The growth parameters such as L = 40.8 cm and K = 0.49 were estimated combining both sexes. The spawning peaks one in May and another in August could be observed. The exploitation ratio of 0.21 indicated that the resource P. Sarana is less exploited along the Tamiraparani riverine system. The life span of P. Sarana was estimated for six year. The study further emphasized that the effort should be increased to achieve the optimum exploitation (0.5) of the present average annual catch of this species from Tamiraparani riverine system in Western Ghats of India in particular.
