BIOTECHNOLOGY AND SUSTAINABILITY IN CHEMICAL INDUSTRIESR.K. Trivedy and R.K. PathakAbstract A lot of new technologies have emerged since the 1970s to make the socio-economical life of human being better and comfortable. Biotechnology has taken the important place amongst the other technology developed since 1970 to 1990, in various fields like food production, renewable raw materials and energy, pollution prevention, and bioremediation. There are many technical and economic problems like environmental impact of biotechnological applications and other socioeconomic issues still need to be solved. This review paper throws light on the current and emerging applications of biotechnology, particularly in the production and processing of chemicals, for sustainable development. Sustainable development has troubled maximum to worlds policy makers and needs to be considered on priority basis.
