PERFORMANCE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF PANELLED ANAEROBIC BAFFLE CUM FILTER REACTORR. RENUKA, S. MARIRAJ MOHAN, B. SOWMIYA1 AND S. AMAL RAJAbstract The panelled anaerobic baffle cum filter reactor (PABFR) was designed to treat the municipal wastewater. The reactor performance was carried out at 6 different HRTs ranging from 40h to 4h for more than 520 days. The HRT of 8h was found to be appropriate for PABFR configuration with the removal efficiency of 95%, 91% and 90% for suspended solids (SS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) respectively. The mass balance of COD indicates that 55% to 58% of the COD in the influent was converted into methane and less than 10% of the COD was left unutilized. On the whole, the PABFR is concluded to be a technically and economically promising alternative for the on-site decentralized treatment of wastewater, particularly for the developing countries.
