Abstract

Development of river banks areas, bed and margins of floodplains without understanding dynamic and hydrological conditions of upstream might causes to human life and economic risks and also leads to incorrect development. Hence, importance of preparing flood zoning maps which are widely used in flood plain managements is demonstrated. In this paper, considering climate conditions and topography of the river bank and the floodplain we specified the rainfall time and return period of Dough River which is one of the tributaries of Gorganrood to determine the flood prone zones for further management in order to reduce damages caused by flood in the rural areas. Thus, in order to do flood zoning and to determining the risk coefficient in the rural areas within the Gorganrood region we used HEC-GeoRas Module in the GIS environment, elevation map and river cross-sections. The present study results show development of floodplains in the study area properly and emphasis on the model effectiveness and finally recommend the model application in the rural planning and development management.
