Abstract

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the physical and biochemical characteristics of some exotic cultivars of apple grafted on Malling-7A rootstock of uniform size and vigour. The trees were planted at a distance of 4x4 m with uniform cultural practices. The cultivars studied were Scarlet Spur, Oregon Spur, Red Gravenstein, Braeburn, Royal Gala, Law Red Rome, Early Red One, Liberty, Red Free, Lodi, Ginger Gold and Red Delicious as a check. The maximum fruit weight was recorded in Early Red One (161.63 g). The maximum fruit firmness (11.09 kg/cm2), organoleptic score (4.15pts) and ascorbic acid content (3.79 mg/100g) were recorded in Law Red Rome. Maximum total sugars (11.34 %) were obtained in Red Free. The maximum total soluble solids (13.59 oBrix)was recorded in Ginger Gold. Titrable acidity was minimum in Early Red One (0.17%) and the maximum was recorded in Red Gravenstein (1.12 %) respectively.
