SapkaleAbstract Embryonic development and morphological changes in the embryos, egg size and development, incubation period of mud crab, Scylla tranquebarica were studied. The incubation period reported to be 6-7 days. Developing embryos were removed from a female crab at various intervals, digitally photographed under a microscope of Lieca system and analyzed using Image-Pro Plus. Five embryonic stages, viz., Blastula, Gastrula, Eye placode, Pigment and Heart beat were identified and described in detail. The size of the developing egg increased at every stage and yolk mass decreased in size and changed colour. The colour of the egg was initially yellow changed to orange, brown and then black colours. The implications of this are discussed.
