V.B. Zaalishvili, D.A. Melkov and O.G. Burdzieva

Abstract

Geothermal heat energy is environmentally friendly, prospects for its effective use in the North Caucasus are real in connection with the use of heat gained by volcanoes Kazbek and Elbrus. This type of energy can be used in a wide range from recreational facilities heating to electric power generation. Profitability assessment requires in the early stages evaluation of heat resources, allocation of the most promising areas and further development of various technical solutions and drilling. But undoubtedly, further depletion of non-renewable resources, and rising costs of energy, exploitation of geothermal resources in Caucasus will be cost-effective. Experience and technology of geothermal energy use in other countries are of interest. The authors had the opportunity to explore the technology during visit to the Azores.
