EFFECT OF DAIRY AND DISTILLERY EFFLUENTS ON PHYSICOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SOIL: A REVIEWV. POONGUZHALE, S. MURUGANANTHAM AND V. MURUGAIYANAbstract Inorganic and organic pollutants from industrial effluent affect the various geotechnical characteristics of soils. Industries discharge wastewater which is characterized by high chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, nutrients, and organic and inorganic contents. Due to the high pollution load of dairy wastewater, the milk-processing industries discharging untreated/partially treated wastewater cause serious environmental problems. Fertigation with distillery effluent added the nutrients as well as heavy metals in the soil environment.
