Abstract

Life on earth depends on water. The largest available source of fresh water lies subversive. Groundwater occurs very generally and its distribution beneath the earth’s surface. Evaluation of water quality can be defined as the analysis of physical, chemical characteristics of water. Water quality index aims at giving a single value to the groundwater character of a source reducing great amount of factors into a simpler expression and enabling easy interpretation of monitoring data. Ground water samples were collected from 80 locations in Erode Taluk during post monsoon and pre monsoon seasons. The collected groundwater samples were tested for 12 physicochemical parameters as per standard methods and procedures. In calculation of Water Quality Index (WQI), the World Health Organisation (WHO) standards were followed. WQI equipped an rapid and easy method of monitoring of water quality. WQI result shows that majority of the water sample fell in “Excellent to Good” category and is easy to compare the quality levels in different sampling locations.
