THE EVALUATION OF KARKHEH RIVER HEAVY METALS CONCENTRATIONS (IRAN)

Farhang Azarang and Hossein Sedghi

Abstract

The Karkheh is one of the most important rivers in Iran and the evaluation of its water quality conditions is of special importance in order to use it for drinking and agriculture. The concentration of heavy metals is considered as a one of the main parameters to assess the quality of water resources. The concentration of heavy metals in the river water depends on the type and severity of urban, agricultural and industrial sanitations. In this study, the average concentration of 5 important elements, Cadmium, Nickel, Lead, Copper and Zinc, which play important role in contamination of the Karkheh River, is considered. In evaluating the average concentrations of heavy metals can be said that the concentration of heavy metals has been increased by going to downstream of Karkheh River and Lead, Nickel and Cadmium had concentrations greater than the maximum allowed for drinking based on different standards in many areas of the river.
