ESTIMATION OF GENE ACTION AND COMBINING ABILITY UTILIZING SOME DIVERGENT MUTANTS OF TOMATO (SOLANUM LYCOPERSICUM L.)

S. Sikder, B. Das, S. Basfore and P. Hazra

Abstract

Five diversified mutant line were crossed with three tester in line x tester (5 x 3) mating design to study the gene action and combining ability for yield and quality traits. Result revealed that there was highly significant variance among the genotypes for different traits and non-additive gene effect was predominant for the inheritance of those traits. Among the parents, Alisa Craig Aft and Alisa Craig were considered as best general combiner. Cross combination Alisa Craig Aft x BCT-53 showed the superior specific combining ability at desired direction for maximum number of traits. On the basis of mean performance, mutant BCT- 115 dg and Alisa Craig hp-1were best for enhancement of carotenoides content, yield attributes and earliness. Whereas, Alisa Craig Aft was best for improvement of anthocyanine, carotenoides and total sugar content. onsidering the mean performance and sca effects togather, Alisa Craig dgXCLNB, Alisa Craig dgXBCT53, Alisa Craig Aftx Patharkutchi and Alisa Craig Aft x BCT-53 were superior for yield and quality traits.
