ENUMERATION AND DETECTION OF NITRIFYING BACTERIA FROM THE GUT OF EARTHWORM (EISENIA FOETIDA)S.K. SHAHEEN, K.VIJAYALAKSHMI, N.D. PRASANNA, K.PAVANA JYOSTNA AND L.VIJAYA SAIAbstract Enumeration of nitrifying bacteria from the Earthworm gut (Eisenia foetida) by a microtiter system based on the Most probable number (MPN) method has been discussed in this study. Higher MPNs were obtained with the microtechnique, with increased accuracy as compared to standard MPN tube technique. Our studies has shown that there are higher number of nitrifying bacteria were associated with earthworm gut. Further nitrification was detected by qualitative tests.
