Abstract

Pollution with cadmium ions has serious negative effect on human health and aquatic ecosystem. Microalgae is an ideal candidate for the treatment of wastewaters for the removal of cadmium ions from aqueous solution. The present study focuses on the potential use of Chlorella vulgaris for removal of Cd (II) ion from aqueous solution and optimized with RSM. Experimental independent variables that affect the biosorption process such as contact time, pH, temperature, initial concentration and concentration of biomass were studied. The optimum conditions Such as temperature, contact time, pH, biosorbent concentration, and initial Cadmium concentration were determined 5.2, 55oC, 25min, 0.4515 mg/L, 80 mg/L, respectively. The fit of the model is expressed by coefficient of determination R2, which was calculated to be 0.913. The results indicate that microalgae Chlorella vulgaris could be employed as a low-cost material and very efficient in metal recovery from solutions.
