Abstract

An investigation was carried out in papaya to study the ultra structural changes and compatibility in grafted plants. Transverse sections were made at the graft union region on 10, 30, 60 and 90 days after grafting from cleft grafted plants of Co.2/9-1(D) combinations. Callus development, necrotic layers, cambial differentiation, cambial continuity and vascular tissue formation were examined. The results revealed that proliferation layers were formed on united scion and stock within 10 days after grafting. The callus bridge formation could be observed within 30 days. Well established vascular differentiations in cambial layers were noticed within 60 days after grafting and on 90 days, it exhibited complete vascular differentiation.
