Abstract

The presence of phosphates in drinking waters leads to calcification and other harmful effects in human beings. Existing methods for phosphate removal have the disadvantages such as high cost, low efficiency and giving up hazardous by products. In the present investigation, a new adsorbent, i.e., paper pulp has been used for phosphate removal which does not have the above mentioned disadvantages. Also, this adsorbent has the advantage of being cheap and exhibited high adsorption efficiency. From the present study it is found that the optimum contact time is 150 min and optimum pH is at 3.0. The adsorption kinetics followed pseudo-second-order system and obeyed Langmuir model satisfactorily.
