Abstract

The use of appropriate, cheap and available planting beds is a priority in ornamental plant production. Five analysis, total chlorophyll content and physical characteristics of the plant with different rates of manures such as vermicompost, cow dung and neem cake were evaluated as growth media for the ornamental plant Codiaeum variegatum. After taking seven pots of the plant each sample of manure was added to every two pots and one pot was taken as control. The physical characteristics of the plant such as the number of leaves, length of the shoot, length of the root and height of the plant were noted down every month. This was carried out for duration of three months. At the end of the third month soil from each pot was taken to test for its pH, organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium and the total chlorophyll content was checked. Results showed that the number of leaves, length of shoot was found to be high in pots with vermicompost whereas length of root and height of plant was found to be high in pots with cow dung. The pH, nitrogen and phosphorous content was found to be high in soil with vermicompost whereas organic carbon and potassium content was found to be high in soil with cow dung. Vermicompost showed better results than cow dung and neem cake in many attributes of plant growth. The use of vermicompost tends to increase in pH, nitrogen and phosphorous content compared to cow dung and neem cake.
