Abstract

In this experimental study, the utilization of the substrates Kitchen waste(KW), Slaughter house waste (SHW) and Poultry litter(PL) in different mixing ratios for anaerobic co digestion were explored. Anaerobic co digestion was carried out in four batch fed of capacity 20 litre digesters in mesophilic temperature ranges between 27° C and 36° C. All the digesters were filled with the substrates in slurry form of 10% total solids. The digesters namely D1, D2, D3 and D4 consist of the substrates KW: SHW: PL on weight basis as 1.5:0.5:1, 1:1.5:0.5, 0.5:1:1.5 and 1:1:1 respectively in the slurry form. The digestion period of the digesters was 70 days. Gas production was measured using water displacement method and composition of gas was measured using portable biogas analyser. The digester D4 which has the equal proportions of Kitchen waste (KW): Slaughter House Waste (SHW): Poultry Litter (PL) as 1:1:1 was found to be optimum which yields the highest methane content of about 70.9% and the maximum daily gas production was about 0.075cu.m. Based on the experiments, it is evident that the substrates showed the significant gas production.
